I know one or two of you has seen Rise of Cobra.
Sometimes I think about shows or movies I like, and wonder how I'd feel about them if the genders were reversed. In Rise of Cobra, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Rex, a mad scientist who, out of devoted but overbearing love for his older sister (who is in a deep depression after his supposed death and her fiancé/his captain's abandonment of her), sneaks into her bedroom in a scene ripped from Nosferatu and injects her with mind-controlling nanomites that turn her into a super-assassin.
It's hard for me to explain exactly why I love that scene. Something about the emotions involved is just so engaging. Rex is desperate, worried for her, frightened, tender and caring. He's also ruthless and crazy and completely detached from reality. He's also wearing some seriously sexy medical gear and using a big, beautiful hypodermic needle. It's a very gendered scene. Ana, the sister, spends the whole movie caught between different men, blowing this way and that way without ever really being able to make her own decisions. So I was wondering how I'd feel about that scene if it were genderswapped, and I think the answer is that my pants would explode.
I'd love to see a female character as brilliant and troubled and over the top as Rex, see her with that kind of power over her brother. James McCullen as a woman would be awesome too- unabashedly kinky and poly, sharply dressed, charming, in control of every situation, flirting with everyone on screen from a position of power. General Hawk, flinty and weathered.
Breaker (a nerdy communications expert who wears a holiday sweater) is precious, and he'd be beyond precious as a girl. Even Scarlett would be kind of charming as a guy. Her whole character is to be the calm, logical one who falls for Ripcord's charm. ...when he pursues her aggressively despite repeated refusals and pounces on her in a vulnerable moment. Not exactly healthy either way, but it just makes my blood boil when the character's female, like she always is.
Awww, imagine boy!Scar and girl!Snake cuddling on the briefing room table! Creepy, willowy Dr. Mindbender seducing Rexi with her doomsday weapon!
The only thing I can't imagine improving is Ana and Stormshadow's relationship. Their whole surrogate-brother-gay-best-friend thing was perfect already.
I don't know who I'd cast as whom, but it'd be pretty awesome.
